Life in Richmond
The University of Richmond campus is located only six miles west of the center of the city of Richmond, Virginia. The capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Richmond is home to the Virginia General Assembly, the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Virginia Court of Appeals. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit also are located in Richmond.
State agencies, such as the State Corporation Commission and the Workers’ Compensation Commission, and many federal administrative agencies hold hearings in the city. Washington, D.C., home of the United States Supreme Court and the U.S. Congress, is only a two-hour drive to the north.
Richmond law students, therefore, have unsurpassed opportunities for observation of the legal process at work in various legislative, judicial and administrative divisions of the local, state and federal governments.
On the lighter side, an array of cultural opportunities is available in the Greater Richmond region, including thirty-five museums, numerous theater companies, a symphony, a ballet and an opera. Richmond is home to three professional, minor-league sports teams and a coliseum for major concerts and sporting events. Theme parks in Williamsburg and Ashland are located within approximately one-hour of the city. The city also includes many beautiful parks and nature trails.
