Alumni College Session*
"From Patton to Homeland: TV, Film, and Questions of Leadership"
3:30–4:30 p.m.
Jepson Hall
What are the media images that we see of leaders and leadership actions in major Hollywood films and popular television series? How do these images inform and change the way we view our leaders in "real life"? How do films and television help to shape and change the demands we have of leaders, of ourselves, and of our society? Dr. Kristin M.S. Bezio, assistant professor of leadership studies, integrates the study of literature into the leadership studies curriculum. Her areas of specialization include leadership in literature and film, leadership in performance, and cultural and political history in Early Modern England. Her teaching and research focuses on the ways in which literature, drama, and film have influenced society and the way people think about issues of leadership and followership. Advance registration is required.
Alumni College Session*
"Voting: Before, During, and After - How We Predict Turnout, Measure It, and Explain It"
3:30–4:30 p.m.
Jepson Hall
What are voting pros and cons, and who are the key players at each stage? This interactive talk is designed to decipher whether voting and our understanding of it is more art or science. Participants will place themselves in the roles of the "authorities" on voting: the consultants who court it, the media who report it, and the academics who (oftentimes) retort it. In those roles, they will be able to see how the goals and professional norms of each group leads to very different perspectives on the voting decision and which parts of the voting process matter most. In the end, participants will see how the journey from pre-election polls, to election day exit polls, to post-election surveys and experiments can lead to vastly different pictures and conclusions, even though the electorate is the same. This program is sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences and presented by Dr. Ernest McGowen, assistant professor of political science. Advance registration is required.
