Job Search Tools and Links
Richmond Law and the Career Services Office provide many online tools for you to use as you research potential employers.
General Information on Legal Employers
- NALP Directory of Legal Employers - This directory contains a NALP Questionnaire and a brief firm resume for each employer that submitted information to NALP. The information is listed alphabetically by state.
- Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory provides information on many law firms, corporations, government agencies and other organizations and allows advanced searches (e.g., a search for alumni in certain cities or states). A hard copy of the Martindale Directory is located in both the Career Services Office and the Law Library.
- Lexis-Nexis allows you to perform more detailed “segment” searches. For example, you can access information such as:
- geographic locations of firms
- size of organization
- areas of practice
- biographies - including law and undergraduate institution attended, specialty areas, published works, awards, when and where they were born
- clients represented
- cases in which an employer has been involved
- publications listing employer
- Westlaw’s Legal Directory also has information on legal employers.
- NALP’s Guide to Small Firm Employment
- Symplicity includes information on employers who have registered on the system under its “Employers” tab. This information may include the names of hiring partners and/or recruiting coordinators, mailing and e-mail addresses, Web sites, and/or hiring criteria.
- Individual employers’ Web sites.
Government and Public Interest Employers and Positions
- EqualJusticeWorks is a non-profit organization that exists to recruit, educate and help law students who are dedicated to working for equal justice on behalf of underserved people, communities and causes to find internships and employment opportunities. By clicking on “find an Opportunity” on the left-hand side of their Web site, you will find short descriptions of and links to sites for EqualJusticeWorks Fellowships, Pro Bono Legal Corps opportunities, the Katrina Pro Bono Legal Corps program, Katrina Legal Fellowships, Summer Corps positions and Emplawyernet. You will also find a searchable database with up-to-date information on the latest public interest jobs and career opportunities by clicking on “Public Interest Job Resources” on the “Find an Opportunity” page.
- PSLawNet, a global network of 100+ schools and 10,000+ law-related public service organizations and offices around the world, offers a wealth of information and many valuable links to other sites. Some of the information on the site is not password-protected. However, for full access, stop by the Career Services Office for information on how to access the complete database, which lists opportunities for paid full-time summer internships, post graduate jobs and fellowships, as well as short-term, uncompensated, volunteer positions.
- The University of Arizona Government Honors & Internship Handbook is a wonderful resource for information on prosecutors, municipal attorneys, assistant attorneys general and other government positions, internships and honors programs. Please note that the handbook is continuously being updated (for example, new positions are posted and existing positions are updated as information becomes available). Also, note that in addition to the information on the various internships, Tables 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Handbook’s Appendix list deadlines for applications by agency name, for 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls, respectively.
- Federal Legal Employment Opportunities Guide includes as an Appendix a listing of all federal departments and agencies with links to the Web sites of each.
- The National District Attorney Association produces a Directory of Prosecuting Attorney's offices.
- Eaton County, Michigan, Web site contains links to the offices of most prosecutors in the U.S.
Please contact the CSO if you have any questions about any of these tools.
