Denise
Carl, Esq., Associate Dean
M. Denise Melton Carl is the Associate Dean for Career Services. Denise graduated from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1984 and brings to the CSO over 20 years of experience in the Richmond legal community including time spent in private practice at law firms and in-house in the legal departments of two companies. She was also part of the management team in a marketing division at one of those companies. Originally from North Carolina, she received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina in 1980 with a double major in History and Political Science before coming to UR for law school. At the law school, she served on the Law Review and Moot Court Board, as a Legal Writing teaching assistant, and as a research assistant for a tax professor. Upon graduation, she worked for Browder, Russell, Morris & Butcher in Richmond on business-related matters before moving in-house at Life Insurance Company of Virginia. She then transitioned within the company from counsel position to director of operations and marketing. She returned to a corporate counsel position at Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield for almost five years, and then moved back to private practice until joining the CSO.
Tracy N. Retchin, Esq., Director
Tracy N. Retchin, Esq., Director of Career Services, graduated magna cum laude as a Political Science major from UCLA, spending her junior year studying in Paris, France, and received her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. She is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar. Prior to joining the University of Richmond School of Law’s Career Services Office, she administered the Pre-Law Advising program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her experience spans the entertainment industry in which she worked for Warner Bros. Inc. and other entertainment companies in Los Angeles and in Paris. Early in her career, Tracy also worked at a Washington, D.C. foreign policy and government relations consulting firm, the Virginia General Assembly for the Senate Education and Health Committee as well as law firms in Richmond, Virginia. Tracy is dedicated to helping students optimally market their talents and legal skills, and to advance their employment objectives by assisting them with individualized, innovative strategic career planning.
Kristen Binette, Associate Director
Kristen Binette is our Associate Director of Career Services. Prior to assuming this position, Kristen spent eight years in college admissions at Washington and Lee University and the University of Richmond. As Senior Assistant Director of Admission at Richmond, Kristen directed the Alumni Recruitment Committee, more than doubling the number of alumni volunteers in a span of two years. Originally from New Hampshire, Kristen received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Washington and Lee University in 2000. She is currently enrolled in the MBA program in the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business and she serves on the Richmond MBA Leadership Council. Within the CSO, Kristen will be engaged in all aspects of legal career planning - including individualized student career counseling, programming, and many of our other ambitious projects – including strengthening our office’s ties to our great alumni base.
Kym Osterbind, Recruiting Coordinator
Kym Osterbind is the Recruiting Coordinator for the Career Services Office. She
manages all aspects of the law school's Fall and Spring recruitment programs,
oversees the on-line recruitment software to promote job opportunities to students, provides career management system training sessions for students and assistance to employers,
coordinates the on-campus interview process, and the law school's
annual off-campus recruitment programs and job fairs in North Carolina,
Los Angeles, Atlanta, Williamsburg, Boston, and Richmond. She is the current Student Affairs Coordinator for the 2008 Southeastern Minority Job Fair and Co-Chair of the New England Interview Program.
Anne Major, Administrative Assistant
Anne Major is the CSO’s Administrative Assistant, and has worked at
the law school for twelve years. She serves as the office’s front-desk
person and first point of contact. She attended Barton College in Wilson,
N.C. and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, and is currently
pursuing a degree at the University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies
in Information Systems and Paralegal Studies. Her work experience includes
time spent at banks, a real estate office, an investment company, a law firm,
and a non-profit foundation. Her achievements since she joined the law school
community in 1995 include providing support to numerous faculty members and
administering aspects of the Law Skills program. She has taken numerous courses
at the University, both to increase her knowledge base for her job and for
the pure enjoyment of learning.
Career Services Advisory Board
The Career Services Advisory Board serves as a liaison between students and the Career Services staff. It meets regularly to discuss topics affecting students in the employment process. The Board assists the Career Services staff in determining the programs and services needed by students, participates in programs where a student perspective is needed and assists with hosting Career Fairs and other programs. Its members serve as mentors for first-year and transfer students.
