State Democratic Caucus

by Jason A. Cecil

While the presidential contests are now over, the Virginia Democratic Party still must have its caucus and conventions to nominate candidates for the fall. If you act before April 10 at 5pm, you could be a delegate to the both the Congressional and State Democratic Conventions later in the spring. There will not be many controversial issues to discuss, but the party should be fun and for those interested in Democratic politics, the potential contacts could prove invaluable.

The first step in the process is the city/county caucus. Every city and county in Virginia meets in caucus to select the state and congressional delegates. The state delegates and the congressional delegates are the same person, but if you can only make one of those conventions, you are still urged to run. Theoretically, there is a filing fee for being a delegate, but as students, that fee can be ignored. The party doesn't allow anyone to be excluded for not paying a fee.

The prefiling form can be downloaded from the state party's site at http://www.vademocrats.org. The Henrico County caucus will be held on Saturday, April 15 from noon to 2pm at Brookland United Methodist Church, located at 2501 Staples Mill Road. For those of you in the City of Richmond, the caucus is set for Saturday, April 15, 2000 at St. Paul's Episcopal's Church, located at 815 E. Grace Street in downtown Richmond, from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m. I could not find the information regarding the time and place of the Chesterfield County caucus, but the person to contact regarding all of the Richmond area cauci is Robert Dailey at robertdailey20@hotmail.com.

The 3rd Congressional District (represented by Bobby Scott) will have its convention at noon on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at the Surry County Administrative Center. The 7th Congressional Distrct (represented by retiring Tom Bliley) will have its convention at noon on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at Short Pump Middle School, located at 4701 Pouncey Tract Road. At the 7th District convention, a straw poll will be held to help determine the Democratic nominee for the open Congressional seat this fall. The state convention will be held on Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3 at the Scope Convention Center, 201 East Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk. For the handful of Richmond Law students who consider themselves Democrats, these conventions promise to be a good time and provide many valuable connections.
