Have the first month of classes have left
you a bit estranged from the "real world"? Well Study
Break is here to keep you connected! You can look forward to
entertainment and pop culture news and happenings both in Richmond
and beyond! In case you missed out, a recap of September brought
a whole slew of big television events including the Emmy awards,
The Miss American pageant, and a new dose of "reality tv"
the Dr. Phil Show!
The 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium
in Los Angeles loved Raymond, made Friends and presented talk
show host Oprah Winfrey with a special award dedicated to recognizing
humanitarianism . Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS) picked up the
awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Ray
Romano's performance as Raymond, Outstanding Supporting Actor
in a Comedy Series for Brad Garrett's performance as Robert,
and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Doris
Robert's performance as Marie. After four consecutive years of
nominations as best comedy, Friends finally walked away with
Emmy. The West Wing picked up another Emmy for Best Drama Series,
and cast members including Allison Janney, John Spencer and Stockard
Channing also won Emmys. Tom Hanks presented Oprah Winfrey with
the first Bob Hope Humanitarian Award which recognizes her individual
achievements which according to the academy mirror the same humanitarian
spirit exhibited by entertainment pioneer Bob Hope. Oprah can
add this personal award to the other 35 Emmys her talk show has
won from the Academy. Visit www.emmys.org
In other Oprah-related news, Dr. Phil premiered his Harpo-backed
solo foray into daytime television talk shows! The show has already
enjoyed the best ratings of any new talk show in almost 17 years,
when his mentor Oprah Winfrey debuted in 1985! The show is syndicated
on the NBC network affiliate in Richmond (WWBT TV-12), and airs
weekdays at 3 p.m. Visit www.drphil.com.
The Miss America Pageant chose a Harvard Law School-bound beauty
queen as Miss America 2003. Erika Harold, a 22 year-old representing
the state of Illinois sang her way to the crown performing Habanera,
from the opera Carmen by Bizet. Harold will spend the next year
developing her platform by promoting anti-violence and anti-bullying
programs among teens, and will also enjoy some of the lavish
perks that come along with wearing the crown from perhaps the
most famous beauty pageants in the world, including a $50,000
scholarship. Visit www.missamerica.org.
Harold's win was not overshadowed by North Carolina sending two
candidates to the pageant pending the outcome of a lawsuit to
determine who would represent the state in the pageant. After
the original Miss North Carolina, Rebekah Revels, an English
teacher gave up her crown after an ex-boyfriend told pageant
executives he had topless photos of her. Miss Revels later contested
her exit and a contract dispute ensued, but the runner-up in
the state pageant Misty Clymer was eventually chosen to represent
North Carolina instead. The word is still out as to whether or
not this incident helped the ratings for this year's pageant!!
