Alumni College Sessions

Alumni College Session #1: "Is Business Ethical?"
Friday, 9:30–10:30 a.m.
Queally Hall

Does business have a social and environmental responsibility? How can business be better? During this discussion, Dean Bagranoff will discuss the ethical history of our economy and why the essential functions and responsibilities of business to the U.S. and beyond are still indispensable and beneficial. This program is sponsored by the Robins School of Business and presented by Dr. Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the Robins School of Business.

Alumni College Session #2: "Born To Be Wild: Rediscover the Freedom of Fun"
Friday, 9:30–11 a.m.
Jepson Hall

For many of us, somewhere on the journey to becoming responsible adults, we have forgotten how to have fun. Perhaps life’s responsibilities, hurts, and losses have sent your sense of joy underground. If so, this interactive course invites you to take a journey through your own life to rediscover the freedom of fun that is inside you, waiting to be resurrected. This program is sponsored by the University of Richmond’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and presented by Jill Baughan.

Alumni College Session #3: "The Shape of the Civil War"
Friday, 2–3 p.m.
Jepson Hall

Today, the American Civil War seems settled, even inevitable. But what if we could see the Civil War in a new, unsettling way, from a radically different vantage point? This lecture will explore that possibility, building on a surprising vision from 1897, one that foreshadowed the digital era in which we currently find ourselves. This program is sponsored by the President’s Office and presented by Dr. Edward L. Ayers, president of the University of Richmond.

Alumni College Session #4: "Leadership in Healthcare: Ethics and Innovation"
Friday, 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Jepson Hall

Healthcare is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. Today, business and political leaders confront urgent ethical questions related to healthcare policy and new medical technologies. For example, do all citizens have a right to healthcare, and if so, how much? Should vaccinations be required for everyone? Dr. Jessica Flanigan addresses these questions in her teaching and research. This engaging program is sponsored by the Jepson School of Leadership Studies.

Alumni College Session #5: "Disrupting the Electric Grid: Are You Ready for Networked Refrigerators"
Friday, 3:30–4:30 p.m.
School of Law, Moot Courtroom

Appliances that talk to the electric grid? Apps that sense your mood and change room temperature? Paying for a latte at Starbucks with credit your solar panels earned? All of this and more is just around the corner, as revolutionary changes are remaking the electric system into a 21st-century Smart Grid. When the plugs in your wall are replaced with an open network, how will you benefit? What laws and policies would best promote these changes? Will utilities transform themselves or go the way of the buggy whip? Law professor Joel Eisen will discuss these and other aspects of this “next Internet” that is spurring exciting innovations and new ways of making and sharing electricity.

Alumni College Session #6: "URiver: An Exploration of Our Local Watershed"
Friday, 3:30–4:45 p.m.
R16 Parking Lot (between Westhampton Lake and Pitt Field)

Do you appreciate the James River? Do you want to get to know it better? Have you wondered about what connection, if any, there is between the river and the University? Wear comfortable shoes for this walking tour of campus, which will focus on the concept of watersheds and the connections between the physical and human environments that can be drawn by exploring the movement of water within the Westhampton Lake watershed. We will follow the flow of water onto campus, into the lake, and eventually out to the James. This program is sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences and presented by Dr. Todd Lookingbill, assistant professor of geography and the environment.

Advance registration is requested for Alumni College Sessions.
