Recent Honors & Recognition

The members of our Richmond Law community are an impressive bunch. This month, we’re taking a moment to celebrate just some of the alumni and faculty who have been recognized recently for their contributions to the legal profession. 

  • Ed Weiner, L’80, former president of the Virginia State Bar, received the 2020 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award for “Outstanding Senior Volunteer” from Governor Ralph Northam.
  • The Greater Richmond Bar Foundation honored Professor Ali Silva Fannon, Director of the Externship Program, with the 2020 George H. Hettrick Leadership Award. Meanwhile, they also recognized Sarah Warner, L’05, and Josh Hanbury, L’09, with 2020 Volunteer of the Year Awards for their work with eviction diversion.
  • Josh Hanbury was also included in Style Weekly’s “Top 40 Under 40” list for 2020, along with Emilee Hasbrouck, L’09, co-founder of the RVA Legal Collaborative, and Kristen Johnson, L'07, Director of Development for Real Life. 
  • Benjamin Leigh, L’96, was recognized by the Virginia State Bar and Virginia Continuing Legal Education with the Travers Scholar Award for embodying the highest ideals and expertise in the practice of real estate law.
  • Virginia Lawyers Weekly honored five Richmond Law alumni with induction into the Virginia Lawyers Hall of Fame: Michael HuYoung, L’82; the Hon. Robert R. Merhige Jr., L’42 (posthumously); Thomas R. Scott Jr., L’76; John C. Shea, L’77; and Lewis Stoneburner, L’76.
  • George Hiller, L’91, received the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement’s “Engage for Change” Teaching Award for his leadership in community-engaged teaching at the University of Richmond.
