New Law and Leadership Professor to Join University of Richmond

The University of Richmond School of Law and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies are pleased to welcome Vincent Chiao to the faculty. Chiao will hold a joint position with the schools as the Tyler Haynes Interdisciplinary Chair starting in fall 2022.

Chiao researches and teaches in the area of criminal law and criminal justice. He is the author of Criminal Law in the Age of the Administrative State (Oxford University Press 2018). He also has interests in the political morality of public law more broadly and is currently engaged in a research project on the rule of law in the algorithmic state.

“My research and writing interests are rather eclectic and interdisciplinary,” said Chiao, “so I’m really looking forward to taking up the Haynes Chair, which will allow me to split my time between a terrific and dynamic law faculty, on the one hand, and Jepson’s unique humanities and social science faculty on the other.”

Chiao comes to the University of Richmond from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where he served as associate professor. He received his B.A. in philosophy from the University of Virginia, his Ph.D. in philosophy from Northwestern University, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. Chiao will serve a one-year fellowship at Harvard before joining the Richmond faculty.
