Richmond Law Connects Students with Future Employers

April 7, 2023
The Career Development Office connects Law Spiders with potential employers ahead of the summer break.

Early connections law students make with prospective employers can lead to invaluable internships, externships, and even full-time employment. That’s why the Career Development Office (CDO) at Richmond Law brought representatives from 15 different employers to campus for the first annual ‘Meet the Employers Night’ earlier this semester. Aimed at fostering interpersonal relationships between students and employers, the inaugural event offered law students a comfortable, casual setting to learn more about the wide variety of law firms and other employers expected to recruit later this year for summer 2024.

Gathering in the Carole Weinstein International Center, students, attorneys and recruiters discussed the finer points of working at the offices represented.

“I know what I want to do with my degree, but I’ve heard where you choose to work can have a major impact on the work you actually do,” said Nathan Crispo, L’25, who attended the event to get a better idea of what life would look like at some of the larger firms in the area.

“I came for the opportunity to ‘speed date’ with some of the biggest firms in the region and get an idea of what their day-to-day atmosphere is like,” he said.  “It was busy, but I was able to speak one-on-one and make connections with the real people making decisions about hiring and recruitment.”

To help facilitate connections, several employers brought Richmond Law alumni to share their experiences, including Jason Hodge, L’16, senior associate attorney at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough.

“In my firm, we know that cultivating the next generation of lawyers is an absolute necessity,” said Hodge. “Getting the chance to come out here, engage one-on-one, and form that early connection is a tremendous opportunity for both students and employers. I know we will be back for the next event.”

“The interpersonal parts of the recruiting process are so important, even in the technological age,” said Janet Hutchinson, associate dean for career development at Richmond Law “It’s exciting to help students and employers meet to share information and form relationships.”

In addition to hosting networking events, the Career Development Office offers one-on-one advising, small group workshops, mock interviews, and more to help Law Spiders identify and secure summer internships and post-graduate opportunities that align with their interests and goals. Students can contact the CDO directly at (804) 289-8638 or visit them in Room 112.
