Student Spotlight: A Journey Shaped by Service
Coming from an Army family and moving frequently, Joe Probus, L’25, learned early on how to adapt to new environments. Prior to college, he joined the Navy and served for three years as an Aviation Bosun’s Mate aboard the USS George H.W. Bush—an experience that solidified his dedication to service and leadership. He went on to earn a degree in history from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2022.
After deciding to attend law school, Joe received scholarship offers from Richmond and two other schools. But what set Richmond apart was the people. The student ambassadors, the faculty, and the staff who genuinely cared—it all made a lasting impression.
“I saw a community of supportive, driven individuals who wanted to see each other succeed. That’s what convinced me that Richmond was the right place for me.”
Once at Richmond Law, Joe took advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities made possible through donor-funded programs. During his 1L summer, thanks to a summer fellowship grant, he had the opportunity to intern at the Department of Criminal Justice Services in the Division of Licensure and Regulatory Services. Over 11 weeks, he worked closely with attorneys and judges, conducted research, and wrote legal memos. In summer 2024, Joe participated in the Richmond Law Cambridge Summer Program and got to experience European culture for the first time studying abroad, all while learning comparative law.
“These experiences were crucial in shaping my legal career. It gave me the confidence to explore different areas of law and refine my goals. Richmond excels at providing personalized opportunities for students. No matter what path you want to pursue, the faculty and staff go above and beyond to help make it happen.”
With his military background and deep respect for service members, Joe plans to practice veterans’ law here in Virginia after graduation.
“I have seen firsthand how challenging it can be for veterans to navigate the complex and costly process of accessing the benefits they’ve earned. I hope to use my legal skills to advocate for them and help secure the support they deserve.”
With the support of alumni and donors, Joe has been able to access the resources and opportunities that have not only enhanced his legal education but also equipped him with the tools needed to advocate effectively for those who have served.
“My journey to law school—and the invaluable hands-on experience I’ve gained along the way—wouldn’t have been possible without donor support.”
