The Fight for Decarceration

February 9, 2021
Richmond Law to host advocate and attorney MiAngel Cody

The University of Richmond School of Law is honored to host “The Fight for Decarceration” as part of the Emanuel Emroch Event Series on February 18.

MiAngel Cody is the lead counsel of the Decarceration Collective, a woman-powered law firm that works to free people sentenced to life in prison for drugs. Cody is nationally recognized for her work, and was named a “Legal Legend” by the American Constitution Society and as a “Top 100 Changemaker in America” by Essence Magazine in 2019.

Cody will be joined in a panel discussion by former client Edward Douglas and criminal justice advocate Latonja Walker. Douglas served 14 years in federal prison on drug charges before his release in 2019. All told, Cody and her team have worked to free over 40 prisoners sentenced to life in prison for drugs.

The Emroch Event Series brings engaging and topical speakers to the University of Richmond School of Law for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, and the community. “The Fight for Decarceration” will take place virtually at 6 p.m. on February 18.
