Richmond Law Hosts Visiting Fulbright Scholar

Bashkim Pretini joins Richmond Law as visiting scholar from University of Pristina in Kosovo through Fulbright Faculty Development Program

Richmond Law is pleased to host Bashkim Preteni, a visiting scholar through the Fulbright Faculty Development Program, for the spring 2023 semester. An assistant professor of law at the University of Pristina in Kosovo, Preteni is a legal scholar whose areas of expertise include contract law, notarial law, and commercial international contracts.

“I’m delighted to be part of the Richmond Law community for this semester,” Preteni said. “I had considered several universities in making my decision, and when I saw the quality of the work being done at the University of Richmond, I knew it was the place I wanted to be.”

While at Richmond, Preteni will work with Marissa Jackson Sow, associate professor of law, who teaches and writes in the areas of contracts, commercial law, and international law. His projects include developing curricula and syllabi for his courses, as well as conducting research for the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.

The Fulbright Faculty Development Program is designed for faculty members teaching in Kosovo, and seeks to introduce participants to best practices and theoretical approaches to curriculum development in the U.S. It also aims provide them with concrete strategies on how to develop curriculum for a course, including an overview of academic and research resources.

Preteni has a diverse background in legal education on a global scale, including serving as a national representative of the Swiss Institute project, which established the notary system in Kosovo; director of the Institute for Free Legal Professions; acting dean of the Law Faculty at the University of Mitrovica; and legal expert in the EU project for the drafting the Kosovo Civil Code. He holds a law degree with distinction from the University of Pristina, and a doctorate degree with distinction from the University of Cologne, Germany.
